Setting up some new rituals
No, the title of this post doesn’t refer to bath or bedtime rituals. Instead, after a nice evening out (our first one!) at Cargo with some friends (more on that later) Ella and I decided this morning to give T a bit of a lie-in and we scuppered off to find a spot where in Hoxton and Shoreditch did nice Wifi with some decent coffee. Found them both at the Bean. Unfortunately, the soundtrack leaves a lot to be desired. Its some sort of weird light latinesque dance. Those of you who know my musical tastes are aware just how. perfect. that. is. for. me. I could wear headphones, I suppose, but how could I let Ella get corrupted like that? If anyone knows of noise-cancelling headwear for 0-6 months, please send me a link. Alternatively, if you know a quiet spot in Shoreditch for a Wifi with coffee access you can send that instead. Its getting bad enough here I am actually preferring the drilling of the street that is occurring outside.
The music was much better at Cargo last night. Now, some of you might be thinking “What are the doing, taking a 2 week old child to a club?” For those of you thinking that, please read the post below — a little bit of time out was much required. Ella did really well, and we relied on the Sucking maneuver to help us through as Cargo has exactly 0 stairs. Not a one. Just ramps that were very slippery. It reminded me of a time in Montreal during the Ice Storm walking a case of beer with Big Red1 to the Hope Street flat. Sure enough I slipped, but had enough presence of mind and agility to take the fall on my back. Or I was lucky. In any event, we didn’t lose one Sleeman. These ramps at Cargo were slightly less slippery, but I was poised to take another fall for the team. Luckily, not necessary.
We were out at Cargo visiting some friends who used to live above us for an open BBQ . Those of you familiar with british bbqs can already picture the scene – absolutely pissing down. Anyhow, we hung out in the quiet restaurant part (we aren’t that selfish!) and talked about things other than Ella. Property mostly, which, combined with children, is now the full allowable extent of my conversational scope. Good thing too, as I was getting tired of everything else. We were exhausted when we got home, but it felt very good to have been out of the house, which is why I ran out the door with Ella this morning, when she started her 7ish post-breakfast scream. Must get out! Mostly because she falls asleep in the sling (another word starting with ‘S’ that I should have mentioned in the previous post. Blame sleep deprivation) immediately. So, we will see if this new ritual takes. I don’t love running out of the house first thing, but screaming and need for coffee are very compelling. Plus, you all get something to read.
